Craig Kieffer Named Certified Genealogist

Books that Changed the Course of History

Is it possible that books have influenced the course of American history?  On June 13, Dr. Charles F. Bryan, president and CEO of the Virginia Historical Society, will be at the East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) to discuss twelve books that have had a long-term affect on public opinion, on the action of government leaders, or on the way people did things in America. 

Executive director of ETHS from 1982-1986, Dr. Bryan now heads one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious historical organizations. His talk is the latest in a series of the monthly Brown Bag Lectures at the East Tennessee Historical Society.

Celebrating “Deely-Bobbers”, Pickle Pins, Petro’s, and the “Chicken Dance”

KNOXVILLE, TN - The East Tennessee Historical Society will take a look back at the 1982 World’s Fair in an exhibition opening next week in downtown Knoxville.  Employing banners, clothing, pins, photos, souvenirs, and other items, the exhibit “When the World Came to Knoxville: Twenty-five Years Later” seeks to capture the flavor and joy of the international event that drew 11 million visitors to Knoxville and left so many with fond memories.

Confederate First Lady Varina Davis to be topic of ETHS Annual Meeting

KNOXVILLE, TN -  Author Joan Cashin will be the keynote speaker for the East Tennessee Historical Society’s Annual Meeting on June 5.  She will discuss her latest book, First Lady of the Confederacy: Varina Davis’s Civil War in which she presents the wife of Confederate President Jefferson Davis as a woman deeply devoted to her husband, yet openly pessimistic of the chances for Confederate independence.  A woman of strong opinions and a forceful personality, Varina Davis surprised family and friends by moving to New York, following her husband’s death, where she became a successful newspaper writer and a friend of Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant.

KNOXVILLE, TN (May 15, 2007)  The East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) in conjunction with Treasures from the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS)

invite everyone to attend a special upcoming film series devoted to the historical images and musical legacy of East Tennessee.  Rare home movies, many filmed over 70 years ago, and missing-in-action television programming from the past have been recently transferred and made accessible once again from TAMIS.  The first installment of their 2007 film series, “The Motion Picture Films of Jim Thompson 1915-1950” will be free and open to the public at the East Tennessee History Center at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 25 due to a generous sponsorship from the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority.

Dr. Colin Baxter to Present Brown Bag Lecture

KNOXVILLE, TN (May 2, 2007)  Dr. Colin Baxter, professor of history and chair of the History Department at East Tennessee State University, will present “Eastman Chemical, Kingsport, and RDX: The Explosive that Won World War II” at noon on May 9 at the East Tennessee History Center in Knoxville. Part of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s Brown Bag Lecture Series, the lecture will look at the World War II contributions of Eastman Chemical and the explosive RDX. Often overlooked as a result of the high-profile nature of Oak Ridge and the atomic bomb, Kingsport and the explosive RDX were just as important to the overall war effort. Dr. Baxter points out that the Holston Ordinance Works, now Eastman Chemical, was the primary production site for RDX, an explosive that ultimately became so vital it was sometimes called “the explosive that won World War II.”

Happy Birthday to Anna Marie Jarvis!

May 1st is her birthday and if she were alive today she would be 143 years old.

Her mother died May 9, 1905 and Anna wanted to remember her. As she thought about it the idea grew and she decided to create a day to remember all mothers.

The first Mother’s Day was held on May 10, 1908 and a few days later the Philadelphia Inquirer printed an article about the huge success of Anna Marie Jarvis’s idea.

BCG Names Professional Genealogists

Leslie Corn, CG, of New York, New York.

Corn is a professional genealogist. She was formerly the Director of Program Production for ABC Radio Networks, the Director of Programming for the CBS Radio Network, and president of her own production company. She earned a BA from Finch College and a MA from Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research. Corn is a Fellow of the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society, and is active in the concept and planning for many of their events. She is a member of several professional and genealogical societies. Corn is also an author and lecturer. She has attended the National Institute on Genealogical Research, and served as a director for their alumni association.

Woodland Cemetery To Honor Veterans in Two-Day Memorial Day Weekend Events

Memorial Day weekend-beginning at 9 AM on May 27 and 10 AM on May 28, 2007-at Woodland Cemetery, 6901 Woodland Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, will feature a rich array of events, including May 28 ceremonies at the graves of two Civil War Officers. Approximately 2,100 veterans of the Civil War, the War of 1812, and post-Civil wars are buried in Woodland Cemetery. The event is free and the public is invited to bring picnic lunches and lawn chairs. The main Cemetery entrance is on Woodland Avenue, with an additional entrance on Quincy Avenue.  Parking is available on side streets.  In the event of inclement weather, events will be cancelled. David McCullough Available for Book Signing at East Tennessee Historical Society

KNOXVILLE, TN - The East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) will host eminent historian and Pulitzer-Prize winning author David McCullough on Thursday, May 3 for a book signing event at the East Tennessee History Center from noon to 2:00 p.m.  The event is free an open to the public.  Books are available for sale at the History Center.  There will also be a ticketed evening lecture at 7:30 p.m. at the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville.  Tickets are $31.50 for the general public and $27.00 for members if purchased through ETHS (call 865-215-8824). David McCullough to Visit East Tennessee Historical Society

KNOXVILLE, TN - The East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) announces that eminent historian and Pulitzer-Prize winning author David McCullough will be in Knoxville May 3 for an evening lecture at the Historic Bijou Theatre and an afternoon book signing at the East Tennessee History Center.

David McCullough has been called “a master of the art of narrative history.” He is a two-time Pulitzer Prize Winner for his biographies John Adams and Truman and twice recipient of the National Book Award, as well as the prestigious Francis Parkman Prize.  He has been honored with the National Book Foundation Distinguished Contribution, the American Letters Award, the National Humanities Medal, the Carl Sandburg Award, the New York Public Library’s Literary Award, and 31 honorary degrees. Mr. McCullough also is well known for his familiar presence on public television as host of Smithsonian World, The American Experience, and narrator of numerous documentaries, including The Civil War and Napoleon.

Library of Michigan's Free Seminar Explores the Latest Online Tools

"Learning More at the Library of Michigan," an annual free genealogy seminar, returns Saturday, March 31 with new and updated programs for genealogists with a wide range of interests and experience levels who want to become more adept at family history research using the Internet.

"We continue to develop new genealogy programs to serve both beginning and experienced genealogists, and to keep up with advances in Internet-based research," said Randy Riley, special collections manager at the Library of Michigan.  "In doing so, we hope to empower our patrons to maximize our extensive collection, as well as trusted Web resources, for their family history research."

BCG Names New Certified Genealogists

The Board for Certification of Genealogists welcomes the latest to pass Certified Genealogist evaluation.

Daniela Moneta, CG, of Phoenix, Arizona. Moneta, a college librarian, earned a MLIS degree. She formerly worked as a genealogy librarian and a book and paper conservator. Moneta teaches family history at Arizona State University and is a partner in the business Genealogy One-on-One.  She published a book on Charles Lummis, the founder of the Southwest Museum, and has written several articles on paper and photo conservation.

East Tennessee Historical Society Brown Bag Lecture “The Spirit of Churchill”

Deborah Brezina, author of a biography on Winston Churchill, will discuss the life and contributions of the famous statesman at a Brown Bag Lecture at the East Tennessee Historical Society at noon, Wednesday, March 14.  Ms. Brezina is the author of The Spirit of Churchill in which she passionately recounts Churchill’s role as a statesman and leader during the dark days of World War II and draws analogies between the challenges of that era and those facing the world today.

OGS Summer Genealogy Workshop

The Ohio Genealogical Society announces its annual summer genealogy workshop to be held at The Society’s library on June 24-29. The society’s headquarters and library is located at 713 S. Main St., Mansfield, OH 44907.

This year the workshop will feature nationally known speakers who will cover many topics of interest to Ohioans and other researchers, such as cemeteries, land records, church records, vital records, internet update, immigration, and military records. Presentations will also cover research in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New England, and German, Italian, and Scots-Irish research, among others.

East Tennessee Historical Society to host “Martha Ann’s Quilt for Queen Victoria”

KNOXVILLE, TN (February 19, 2007)  On Sunday, February 25, ETHS will host Kyra E. Hicks, as she presents a lecture based on her latest book, Martha Ann’s Quilt for Queen Victoria, a children’s version of Martha Ann Erskine’s remarkable journey from slavery in East Tennessee to the Court of Queen Victoria. Ms. Hicks is also the author of Black Threads, An African American Quilting Sourcebook and is a noted authority on African American quilts. She will be available following her lecture for a book signing.
